Meet the Team

Tony Brown

Tony holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees from UNSW and was admitted to practice law in July 1976. Initially he worked for a small firm in the city and in August 1979 he joined Peter Sorensen at Crows Nest. Tony has been with Sorensen & Brown ever since and has been the managing partner for the last 20 years.

Tony practices in the areas of property, wills & estates, estate planning, commercial law including commercial litigation and family law. His family law practice mainly deals with property disputes and Financial Agreements between parties after the breakdown of their relationships or in second or later relationships. He also does a lot of work in the wills & estate planning area which often includes Binding Financial Agreements between spouses whether married or not. These areas of law often intersect so knowledge and skill in both is essential.

Tony also has more than 40 years’ experience in conducting civil litigation, mostly in the Supreme and District Courts, and has conducted several appeals to the NSW Court of Appeal over the years.

Tony has been married for 35 years and has 3 adult children. With his wife Judy he spends time on their rural property at Tarana, does four-wheel-drive trips all over Australia and occasional overseas trips.

He has had a lifelong interest in competitive yachting in which he has competed at international levels. He still races his Etchells class yacht on Sydney Harbour and occasionally competes on other yachts.

Since his teenage years Tony has provided voluntary services to the sailing community including having served on committees of The Lightweight Sharpie Association, Mosman Amateur Sailing Club, Sydney Flying Squadron and most recently as a Director of Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron for 12 years. He is still actively involved in the Squadron being a member of the clubs house committee and regularly provides legal advice to the club on a variety of matters. He has also advised and acted for other yacht clubs in Sydney.

Tony was recently recruited for the Committee of the Tarana & Fish River Development Group a group of people who have interests in the Tarana fish River area who are attempting to work with Lithgow and Oberon Councils and local residents to get more government funding to improve the area and ensure the funds spent by these authorities are spent appropriately.

Peter Sorensen is the founding partner of the firm Sorensen & Brown which he established in Crows Nest in 1970.

In his long period of practice he has been involved in most areas of the law with clients Sydney wide. He has acted for clients with a wide range of problems including people with small disputes to large companies with extremely complex issues. He always has the interests of his clients in mind and wherever possible will attempt to avoid the costs of litigation. He currently concentrates on the areas of wills and estates, conveyancing and leasing and commercial law.

Peter has been actively involved in the community in many ways. He has involved in pro bono (free) legal work for some time for which he received an award from the Law Society of New South Wales. He has also been on the board of four different sailing clubs and Commodore of Middle Harbour 16 Foot Skiff Club and acted as a solicitor for all of these clubs mostly free of charge. He has also managed to fit in championship level sailing winning Australian and world championship racing.

Peter also established a charity to raise funds for Leukaemia research in memory of one of his sailing crew who passed away at the age of 28 from Leukaemia. As a thank you he was subsequently awarded an Order of Australia medal for services to charity and yachting.

With his wide range of experience with most areas of law and his community services Peter is a practical concerned lawyer who always has the interests of his clients at heart and is always conscious about minimising costs for his clients. Peter’s prime objective is to leave his clients happy with his services.

Julie Davis

Julie Davis is a senior Legal Secretary who joined Sorensen & Brown in early 2014. In 2013 she undertook and attained a Certificate IV in Legal Services and has a Diploma in Legal Services.

Julie has assisted hundreds of clients in all aspects of estate planning, wills, the administration of deceased estate matters and the formation of family trusts. Additionally she has assisted our business clients with sales or purchases of business and their commercial needs. As for litigation she has also worked on hundreds of family law matters, ranging from straight forward divorce matters to complex property settlements.

She has a strong work ethic who believes a good competitive edge lies in going above and beyond for a client during times of life hardship and stress.

Outside the office Julie enjoys a wide range of outdoor activities and has a keen passion for health and wellbeing and having a healthy work life balance.

Amelia Gavagnin

Amelia Gavagnin is a Licenced Conveyancer and holds the following qualification – BA, DipEd, MA (Public Policy) and MA in Egyptology. Amelia has also been a Justice of the Peace since 1984.

Amelia has been working in conveyancing for over 30 years, firstly as a legal secretary, then as a paralegal and for the past 4 years as a licenced conveyancer.

She has a vast experience in all facets of conveyancing including sales, purchases, options and leasing of residential, commercial, freehold, strata and Company title properties. She is aware of the needs of financial institutions for both sales and purchases and is on top of documentation required for government grants and exemptions/reductions of stamp duty.

Amelia has been a member of our firm for almost 12 years and is an integral part of our conveyancing section. Most recently Amelia has assisted us in making the transition from paper to electronic transactions.

History of the Firm

Peter Sorensen founded the firm in Crows Nest in 1970. The firm changed its name to Sorensen & Brown in the early 80’s after Tony Brown had become a partner. Sorensen & Brown is the longest standing firm currently practising in Crows Nest.

Sorensen & Brown provides a range of services which have evolved in response to, and are matched to, the needs of the local community. It serves both commercial and private clients many of whom come from the north shore of Sydney but some of whom are scattered around the country and even overseas.

The firm’s area of practice includes small to medium business and general commercial, all conveyancing and property matters, commercial leasing, commercial litigation, family law, wills / estate planning, probate and contested estates. Both partners also regularly act as executor of wills.

Sorensen & Brown aims to provide its services at a high standard and a reasonable price. The firm attempts to provide simple and cost effective solutions to its clients’ legal problems using the skill, knowledge, experience and innovation of the partners and staff.

The firm is well versed in and regularly uses all the alternative dispute resolution techniques currently available.
